A stunning hand painted Bath kitchen with glass and light a plenty

by Sam Shaw

The Design Brief

Kitchen design can start with the smallest of seeds and in this case it was a small piece of glass that Claire and Matt had found which was just the right colour. Our job was to match this glass and have it flowing around the entire kitchen and then use this to bounce and reflect the light from strips of LED’s flushed into the base of the floating shelves. We needed to include all the built in appliances and surround the fridge with tall cabinets whilst keeping clean lines running down the length of the kitchen.

The Build

Our larder cabinet is lit from the inside by the same LED lights that we included in the shelves except a clever concealed switch ensures the lights come on every time the doors open. The two wall cabinets either side of the extractor include three small spice drawers in the bottom section, they run on waxed Maple runners and are sanded to fit tightly in the space. We had such a small amount of reclaimed timber to build them from that we decided to use it only for the front section of each box and use our standard Oak for the rest, this had the stunning result of two tone dovetails.

To achieve the stunning effect of three metre long chunky floating shelves with no brackets we actually needed to build the shelves from Birch plywood to ensure their long term stability through the changing seasons; we lipped the shelves with 10mm thick Oak on all the edges and then veneered both faces to give the effect of solid Oak. All the doors, frames, spice racks and drawer boxes are solid Oak and the worktops are 30mm sandstone. The reclaimed timbers that we used in the spice drawers are Maple, Walnut, Cherry, Ash, Sapele and steamed Beech.

The Cost

The total price for this kitchen including appliances, shelving, granite worktops, larder cabinet, all the LED lighting and glass splash backs was £27,930.00
