The Importance of Home Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important features in a house, however, it’s been overlooked in the past. Lighting has the power to change the mood and how space is perceived in size and function. Using the right type of home lighting, finding the correct placement, colour while considering the room size and natural light is a difficult task and can be overwhelming, but it is essential if we want to create a comfortable and welcoming room where you feel harmony and the effortless fluidity of design.

Certain types of lighting help illuminate the walls and ceilings giving the illusion that they are bigger or smaller depending on how they’re used. Wall lights can add length and size to an entryway hall, as well as light the way to other areas of your house.

A good home lighting plan combines three forms of lighting to light an area according to function and style.

Task lighting – Helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, preparing and cooking food, doing homework, working or just playing games. It can be achieved by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting and under cabinet lighting e.g (LED), as well as tall portable lamps and desk lamps. Task lighting should be bright enough to prevent eyestrain and help you perform your task with safety.

Ambient lighting – Mood lighting uses different tones and colours of light, as well as different levels of brightness, with the aim of creating an atmosphere in a room. In many cases, it uses soft and warm light to induce a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Accent lighting – As part of an interior design scheme, it is used to draw the eye to plants, paintings, sculptures and other prized possessions. It can also be used to highlight the textures on walls. To be effective, accent lighting requires as least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting surrounding it.
