Cotswold Eco House
by Sam Shaw
Did you know that it is cheaper to build your own house than to buy someone else’s? When you take this elementary fact and add a twist of German passivhaus philosophy, making your house incredibly cheap to run too then you start to ask yourself “why wouldn’t I build my own house?”
Tara and Dimitri have held this view for quite some years and after moving away from London, raising a young family and finding the perfect plot in the hills looking over Stroud, finally the time was right to start building the dream. Having found an architect, arranged a mortgage and approved the designs; finally building works started towards the end of 2013
We met Tara a month or two later when they turned their attention to the internal design of the property and we are relishing the opportunity to build a kitchen that will complement their new family home. Maintaining the theme and Tara’s vision of a largely plywood interior with Dinesen timber floors on the upper level and polished concrete on the lower level; we are building the kitchen entirely from Birch Plywood and using stainless steel worktops and chunky castors to harness that industrial theme.
Work is due to finish on the house late in July and we can’t wait to see how this innovative design sits in the rolling Gloucestershire countryside.
