We visited k+b Design and Ecobuild at Excel in London, a great day spent looking at innovative technologies and kitchen trends.

Finishes

Stunning handmade copper baths and basins from William Holland in a myriad of different finishes.

There is a definite move away from the traditional tap finishes of chrome and brass to more industrial and modern look with matt black and colourful silicon wraps.

Technology

Sliding door systems from Salice are a growing trend in fitted kitchens with doors that open and then slide away into the cabinets leaving a neat and open storage or preparation space. Great for hiding away washers and dryers in a laundry cupboard or your toaster and kettle in a breakfast cabinet.

The desire for open plan living creates lots of problems with extraction and air quality in kitchen/living areas. The integrated Nikolatesla hob and extractor fan from Elica is the first induction hob with a fully integrated air suction system.

Air pollution is an ever growing concern and innovative products such as The Snap air quality balancer also from Elica monitors and can improve the air quality in your home by recycling the air when necessary.

Living spaces

Due to the ever growing built environment there is increasing pressure on housing space which has spurned a trend in compact living. These one unit smart apartments from Diamondmodule are a great solution.

Materials

Tactile and cosy materials featured heavily such as cardboard and these amazing cork wall tiles from Granorte. The cork used is a by-product of the cork stopper industry, providing sustainable and insulating flooring and wall solutions.

Eco learning

Teaching sustainability to business and schools is a huge and necessary step to implementing environmental change. Making it fun definitely helps and playing the How bad are bananas game certainly taught us some things we didn’t know about carbon footprints.
