Bright Open Plan Family Kitchen in London

by Olga Alexandru

The clients wanted to create a beautiful and practical space to suit their day-to-day family life – a large prep area, plenty of storage and a handy spot to sit and socialize and for the children to do homework.

This kitchen uses traditional Shaker style cabinetry, mixed with contemporary colours and finishes to create a fresh and modern take on a classic kitchen. This kitchen is all about the details – a polished chrome finish is translated across the knobs and hinges, tying in with the stainless steel finishes of the cooker and fridge freezer. There are large glazed doors at the end of the room, allowing plenty of light into the space. The family wanted the kitchen area be flooded with as much light as possible, which has been achieved by using a light cabinet colour and reflective surfaces to help bounce the light around. The island is a gorgeous shade of dark blue to introduce some colour into the minimalist palette of the room.

The chimney breast is the main feature of the space, creating a grand statement with its symmetrical, tall wall cabinets fitting into each alcove, framing it beautifully. The extractor is tucked inside the chimney breast finished neatly with a cornice style shelf for storing knick-knacks. We have added handy spice racks each side of the range which perfectly suits the size and shape of this shallow spot – and it is in a convenient space to access whilst cooking. The sink run includes a 1.5 bowl inset sink, with a large double bin, integrated dishwasher and a set of drawers. Above this is a large, double wall cupboard which offers a fantastic area for displaying the clients glassware and favourite cookbooks.

There is a wine cooler at the end of the island which is conveniently located by the dining table handy for a cheeky drink during dinner. The rest of the island is used for a combination of storage and seating. The fridge has cabinetry built around it to provide a fantastic storage area. The double larder to the side has spice racks fitted to each door to help organise the space, and is deep enough to store a microwave inside.
