AMERICAN DINER-STYLE INDUSTRIAL KITCHEN

With some creative design, we were able to bring a taste of 1950s America to Bristol’s boho borough of Bishopston.

American Diner-Style Industrial Kitchen – The Brief

To this day, this project still generates plenty of phone calls and questions about the design process. We love the honesty of the industrial look, and using contemporary, hand painted flat panel cabinetry was the perfect way to achieve this. We combined our chunky, hand painted oak frames with flat birch plywood doors, providing a beautiful backdrop for the American Diner feel to shine through.

Our clients, a young family with creative vision, asked us to maximise the use of space without having any wall cabinets. Instead, they wanted to to use the high ceilings and large expanses of wall to make a statement. Knowing this, we used subway tiles from the unit tops up to the ceiling, and chose a bright cobalt paint colour to give the room a contemporary vibrancy.

The full height and installed open shelves, with their iron brackets, created an authentic American industrial feel. The industrial look was further enhanced with the money-saving option of leaving the extractor pipe exposed. This was a kitchen that navigated its budget constraints to expert effect.

As you may know, we have a strict policy to use only the most sustainable and responsibly-sourced materials available. We constructed the cabinets from the highest quality solid Birch Plywood, and painted them by hand. The doors were sprayed with a primer and coated in Farrow & Ball’s St Giles Blue no 280. We applied a final coat of paint on-site to achieve the perfect finish.
