Contemporary London Townhouse Kitchen in architect extension

This family used London architects Conibere Philips to develop an incredible, dramatic extension with sloped ceilings and huge glass pivot door.

It was key for our client to develop a space that would suit the whole family and open up the home to make the rooms feel more connected. The extension includes a dining area, kitchen with breakfast bar plus window seating creating room for all the family without feeling on top of each other.

For the kitchen, we made the most of the high ceilings by designing floor to ceiling flat panel cabinetry giving the client plenty of storage to hide everything away; ultimately keeping the kitchen minimal and fresh. With plenty of on-site coordination, the skylights line up perfectly with the clean white cabinets allowing natural light to shine through onto the cooking and prep space. The handpainted finish allows the natural grain in the wood to shine through without looking glossy.

The beautiful Bianco Baleno splashback and worktops complement the extension continuing the fresh aesthetic whilst bringing a luxury feel. We used oak for the shelving, seating and island details to warm up the room to ensure that the high ceilings and white cabinetry didn’t feel spacious or cold. Pairing bianco with oak on the island allowed us to bring warmth to the side of the bench that the family dines at.

The clean, simple in-frame style keeps the extension looking calm and relaxed drawing attention to the window bay and pivot door which looks out onto a long garden, bringing the outside in. Within the window, we crafted a seating area flowing on from the kitchen to make best use of the green views and enjoy the calm at the rear of the house. The space can be used through all seasons with storage underneath to tuck away the thick winter blankets.

The extension is a true architectural work of art. Walking into the house from a fairly busy street, you are hit with an instant feeling of calm.

Everyone we dealt with at Sustainable Kitchens was professional, skilled and extremely helpful. We’re so pleased with the beautiful kitchen they have made and installed. The quality is superb and it has exceeded our expectations! A pleasure to deal with from start to finish and the fact they are based in Bristol was not a problem in the slightest. The fact that everyone is so well organised made the installation in London super easy and efficient. Thanks so much!

A great project to be a part of; the cleaness of the space, so bright and open, the perfect space to cook and entertain. I enjoyed working with the other trades on site to work on elements such as the sky light to line up perfectly with the cabinetry.
