Springfield Contemporary Cottage – The Brief

It was important to our client to design a kitchen that was seamless and uncluttered, whilst ensuring everything had a place. The simple row of cabinetry holds a dramatic look that will never go out of style; the clever use of lines, the handleless doors and concealed hinges all give the kitchen a timeless, minimalist aesthetic. The room holds fabulous artwork from Allan Caswell, Rosemary Vanns and pottery by Kim Donaldson adding to the elegance.

From initial consultations, it was clear from the brief that we needed to integrate a downdraft extractor and source a slim, yet wide hob to ensure that we didn’t have deep worktops taking up too much space or an extractor on show that would reduce the minimalist feel. Using Neff and Siemens, we found the perfect combination to pair together which was strategically placed in front of the window allowing for a green view whilst cooking, and at the end be able to hide the extractor away and wipe the hob clean. Usually, with downdraft extractors, space underneath is left out of bounds to make room for the motor. Here, we housed around the motor so the client still had use of shelving to house smaller items such as dishcloths and spices.

The L shape design meant that the clients could use the additional space for their dining table overlooking their garden and nearby fields making their smaller kitchen still a sociable hub. The cabinetry includes a half larder which hides away appliances and food jars whilst leaving space alongside to have open bookshelves displaying beautiful pottery and much-loved cookbooks. Hidden away is a dishwasher, tall fridge, innovative storage solutions and concealed drawers to add to the clean, unfussy contemporary look.

This modern kitchen holds a cutting-edge, yet inviting feel in this stunning country cottage.

I like the clean and simple flat panel design. The downdraft is a really unusual feature and works well to keep the kitchen minimal and elegant.  The client has great bold paintings and pottery bringing a real arty vibe to the space.
