Seeing such a beautiful home designed by architect Charlie Luxton was an exciting moment. We couldn’t wait to get our teeth sunk into such a creative project.

Contemporary Eco Kitchen with lye treated drawers and Smeg oven

Contemporary Eco Kitchen – The Brief

Our client is a real foodie – in fact, she even runs Vietnamese cookery classes from her home. With this in mind, she needed a design that catered both for family life and an educational set up. This really drove the design process for the kitchen.

From the very beginning, Tara knew the worktop had to be stainless steel. That was one of her pre-requisites, so we incorporated it into the design and very quickly decided to complement it with an exposed birch plywood finish.

Our floating shelves were a real hit. We fabricated them from the leftover Dinesen floorboards laid throughout the house, simultaneously making perfect use of existing materials while adding an element of continuity into the home’s design. The shelves glide around the perimeter of the room, housing discreet LED lighting and hiding the extractor.

The piece de resistance is the centre island. Clad on three sides with stainless steel and running on immense industrial castors, it wheels effortlessly around the room: perfect for education, entertaining, and everyday life.

Tara kept a detailed blog about the whole project, which you can find at Future.Simple.Passive.

"We were delighted with our entire experience of working with Sustainable Kitchens. The design process was a complete pleasure. We wanted a unique contemporary kitchen and they enthusiastically embraced the challenge. Sam really listened to what I wanted and was prepared to change, refine, experiment as many times as was necessary until all the detailing was perfect. Nothing was too small or insignificant- and this was all juggled with entertaining my toddler in their showroom kitchen! It was such a personal service, I was able to see the cabinets being made up in the workshop and kept up to date with progress. Installation was brilliant and Charlie made sure that the attention to detail was maintained to the very end. The workmanship is excellent and the pleasure gained every day from using our beautifully crafted kitchen is priceless."
