Job Opportunity – Operations Manager


Job Title: Operations Manager
Reports to: Managing Director
Location: Based in Bristol,  with regular travel to clients

We are an independent kitchen design, manufacture and installation company based in Bristol and working throughout the UK.  We trade as Sustainable Kitchens and Honest Kitchens under the overall business name of Honest Living Limited.  Our award-winning kitchens are created with the highest quality and most sustainable materials. Sustainable Kitchens offers a completed bespoke high-quality product and full service, whereas Honest Kitchens is the same quality product with standardized sizing and delivery only service. Both perfectly suited to meet the needs and lifestyles of our clients.

This is a very exciting opportunity for a self-starter to join a small company with big ambitions.  Your goal is to project manage materials, process flows and development programmes from procurement to final delivery and installation.  You will be especially responsible for establishing and managing a cost-effective quality assured supply chain for Honest Kitchens products.  These have great potential for the business. You will be part of a highly motivated team with a passion for quality and environmental responsibility.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in a similar position, perhaps as a Materials Manager.  The role requires a high degree of professionalism, together with excellent communication, managerial and organisation skills.

Key responsibilities:


Research potential suppliers and negotiate prices to ensure best cost supply. Build and maintain close relationships with key suppliers.  Oversee purchasing and contracting for all materials, supplies, equipment, and services as required for the efficient operation of the business. Ensure that all materials are ethically sourced and appropriately certified. 

Record and assess all materials quality, movement and expenditure. Keep detailed records of procurement activity, materials prices, quantity, quality and specifications. Ensure that all materials price changes are communicated to the design team for inclusion in future quotations. Work with Accounts and Sales to ensure profitable pricing for all contracts. Identify and develop opportunities for cost down procurement. 

Maintain optimum inventory levels to ensure on-time deliveries to meet workshop and customer requirements whilst minimising costs. Establish procedures and supervise regular physical inventories.


Assess “make or buy” decisions for all materials and components. Where appropriate financially and operationally, arrange Just in Time sourcing from approved suppliers. Ensure that quality specifications are adhered to. For Honest Kitchens products, develop a range of quality approved suppliers for materials, components, worktops and part or complete cabinets. Ensure a trouble-free supply chain for Honest Kitchens products. Determine “make or buy” requirements depending on the capacity available within manufacturing, and schedule materials flow accordingly.

Lean systems and processes

Lead and deploy lean practices by taking the initiative to support continuous improvement in all departments. Recommend and help to implement solutions to improve processes and productivity, including enhanced MRP, simplification and higher usage of current systems. Facilitate, execute and manage improvement projects to reduce costs significantly by implementing Lean, WCP, and Six Sigma tools and methodologies.  Champion the use of CAD for workshop drawings. Ensure safe working at all stages.


Ensure that all new materials, components, outsourced items and design changes are fully tested before release to manufacturing.  Project manage all development programmes, product testing, and new products release. Progress chase all items behind schedule. Work closely with the manufacturing and design teams to review all reworks and institute revised practices to avoid recurrence. Ensure that the design team are aware of alternative materials and components from suppliers.

Cross-departmental cooperation

Work closely with the design, production and installation teams to make sure that each kitchen is designed, manufactured and installed on schedule and to budget whilst achieving high standards of customer service.  Building strong relationships with all teams is fundamental to the role.


The Operations Manager reports to the Board of Directors on the Honest Kitchens supply chain, and current performance in relation to budget, targets and KPI’s.  The Operations Manager is also responsible for communicating progress with development projects and cost down initiatives. 

The role is supported by the Works and Installation Managers and their team, and two Production & Planning Engineers. 

Experience required

  • Several years in a manufacturing environment
  • Procurement experience, ideally for wood working applications
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing techniques
  • Experience of supply chain management for assembly operations
  • Project management experience

      A good working knowledge of some or all of the following systems would be an advantage:

  • CRM Systems – HubSpot
  • Task Management Systems – Asana
  • Time Scheduling Systems – Teamweek (could be replaced by ERP or MRP system)
  • Time recording – Harvest 
  • Cloud filling – Google Drive & Dropbox
  • CAD

Remuneration: £35,000 to £45,000 depending on experience

Holidays:           22 days + statutory holidays, rising with length of service
Pension:            Employer contribution of 3% of salary through Peoples Pension.
